AIDS-phobic public. The only money Soviet people with AIDS can earn is 150 rubles (about $5.00) for donating their blood for research once a month.

AIDS specialists prescribe AZT and pentamidine, but only when the patient is ill enough, in the doctor's opinion, to warrant them. The majority of patients are said to be heterosexual, having contracted the virus through sexual relations.

Once the AIDS patients' initial shock wore off at the arrival of so many foreigners who seemed to care, many cried in response to the attention, and gay people with AIDS were invited to the symposium.

U.S. and Soviet gays handed out thousands of condoms to shocked and bemused passersby on the Nevsky Prospekt in Leningrad, and in front of Moscow City Hall. Most people eagerly took the "preservateefs."

Perplexed Soviets also watched a gay kiss-in across from Moscow City Hall, and an anti-Article 121 and anti-U.S. sodomy law demonstration on the steps of the Bolshoi Ballet, a gay cruising site and, often, a gay-bashing site.

Washington D.C., activist Barrett Brick and others performed a moving Shabbat service in Leningrad, defying the often anti-Semitic atmosphere in the Soviet Union.▼
